The top of the sugar maple in my garden is all aglow with red and orange leaves while the silver maple is pale yellow. But they’re both far above my sightline.
What’s catching my eye down below are the plants that are going to seed in an elegant way like the Martagon lilies (Lilium martagon, below) and ornamental onions (Allium thunbergii Ozaea and Allium senescens Glaucum).
But the plant whose seedpod is the loveliest — far more lovely than its flowers — is that old garden standby known by so many names: Honesty, Silver dollars or Money plant (Lunaria annua, below). You don’t need much more than a vase — certainly no water — to transform them into the perfect fall decor.
Here they shine in a monochromatic combination: a cloth scattered with skeletal leaves, a bowl of peeling onions and a vase of dried Lunaria pods. An appealing arrangement that won’t require your attention again. At least not until you eat up all the onions.
I especially like all the circles in this grouping — the pantry door knobs, the pods and onions, the wonderful dots on the ceramic vase, even the rims of the containers — all contribute to the effect.
