When I reviewed "In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin" back in September, I mentioned the story of Mildred Fish Harnack, a Milwaukee native, who met her German husband at UW-Madison in the 1920s. The Harnacks moved to Germany and eventually became underground resistance fighters there during WWII. Both were executed by the Nazis. Mildred initially got life in prison, but Hitler ordered a retrial and she died at his command via the guillotine. She was the only American woman explicitly ordered killed by Hitler.
Tonight Wisconsin Public Television will broadcast a program about Harnack — "Wisconsin's Nazi Resistance" — at 8 p.m. on Ch. 21 in Madison. Consult the WPT web site for information for other stations around the state.
