Having worked in a library for 25 years, I can vouch for the importance of the cover design and art as well as the ease of reading the title and author of the spine when one is trying to locate the book. These things don't affect the content but if you don't find or choose the book because of them, all is lost.

Another librarian weighs in.... Yep, the cover is all. At least for me. I even have a hard time starting a book with a bad cover even if it has been highly recommended.

Given your library background, now I dont feel so bad. Also as a graphic designer, I am so aware of how design savvy people are today. I think it is hard to sell anything that is poorly packaged.
