Rather than hanging baskets, these pergolas at the Chicago Botanic Garden were decorated with plantings that were more like blankets of blossoms. They were completely covered with flowers on both sides cascading over the top beams. Of course, you need a pretty high pergola to get such a dramatic effect without having the flowers hit you in the face!
This vertical trellis is another one of many great ideas from the Buehler Enabling Garden at CBG allowing you to garden without having to get down on your knees.
Those hanging gardens always intrigue me. I have yet to get much to go up and over a tall trellis. Might be my choice of plants. I love this look of draping blooms.

Lisa — Now that you mention it, I have not done much of anything with trellises. Did try to get a Sweet Autumn clematis to scramble up a tree like you see in pictures with little success.

Those pergolas are beautiful. I'd love to walk through that area.
