We've been having a spurt of warm weather along with rain that washed away most of the snow cover in the garden. But we'd had enough heavy snow cover that most plants were smushed and smashed when I took a little stroll around the garden yesterday. I found a few things that still looked good. I think it may be because they were newly planted last year and are not very tall. The mature versions of the Arum Italicum and ferns are all broken and dreadful looking.

This morning we woke to a completely different scene in the front garden . . .
and the back garden.
Mark took the distance shots from inside and then went out to capture more views. While he was out he talked to a city worked who was in front of our house. Turns out a water main broke at the top of the hill a few houses west of us on our street. It will take them 3-5 hours to repair it. They're shutting the water off soon so we filled some bucket and pitchers with water so we have it if we need it. It's starting to snow again along with some thunder and lightening. Gotta love those public employees who are out working in such unpleasant conditions.
You are having an exciting winter. We got tons of rain last weekend and now temps will be moving into a more normal winter range. That's good but it means I have one last day of coffee outside on the porch. Mark's winter pictures are beautiful.

It looks so pretty when freshly fallen. I love the silence. If only it could smother all the ills of the world.

Oh yes, those public workers are amazing.
Your fresh snowfall sure is pretty. I am sure you are sick of it. The cold spell is blowing in here as I type. It is to return to winter here tonight. I hope your water isn't off too long. Cheers.

Jessica — Hmmm, smother the ills of the world. Sounds good.

Well that was quick! If ours returns I think I'll be doing more than just visiting California

Loree — Midwinter thaws here are pretty short, so this was typical. Glad to get a couple of inches of snow since temps are going to take a dive again.

I guess we were fortunate to have the thaw while it lasted. I was tempted to look at my Hellebores, but I kept the leaf mulch in place--I know they start budding in December, but thinking about the March blooms makes me a little antsy.
