Just read that the great garden designer Nori Pope has died. Fergus Garrett showed some stunning color combinations in his talk in Madison last week but they were tame compared to the stunning color-themed garden the Popes created at Hadspen House. Luckily they wrote a book on the subject of color in the garden as their work at Hadspen no longer exists. Here's an article from Gardens Illustrated on Nori.
Nori and Sandra Pope
It would have been a delight to have visited Hadspen during the Popes' stewardship. Despite being obsessed by color in my early gardening years, though, I was seriously underwhelmed by their book.

Sad. I have a book on their garden and remember this photo, or one substantially like it.

This Gardens Illustrated link took me down a rabbit hole of interesting articles.
I wasn't aware of this couple. I have seen the book but didn't ever purchase it.

I pulled their book off the shelf again and I wondered if I ever really read the text. I think I was just taken with those grids of plant pix by color. It was a really different treatment in a book and has always been the thing I remember most.
