My grandfather went to work in the coal mines in Scranton, PA as a small boy. He grew up to be a union man. Here he is at the Elevator Construction Local #10 union picnic in 1926. He's in the center back wearing the cap. This is just a small clip out of a 26" long panorama photo.
Back in the 1970s when I worked at the chi-chi Ovens of Brittany/Baker's Rooms, we tried to form a union. I've still got my button, but remember nothing about the campaign. This is one of many political buttons from over the years, all saved in a clear plastic box.
It's always interesting to view blasts from the past like these. My post-graduate career was in human resource management, not a field known for being particularly supportive of unions but, despite the checkered histories of some past (and present) unions, I've generally held them in high regard, especially after I saw how they supported my stepfather during difficult times - they help balance the power that is otherwise centralized in corporations.

I had forgotten all about Ovens of Brittany. What seems so common now, was indeed very chi chi back then.
Unions make so much sense. It makes me sad to think of all the damage Walker did that still continues in 2020.
